SAVE THE DATE!

Watsonville, CA –The Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers are proud to present the 3rd Annual Monterey Bay Greenhouse Open House on Saturday, June 16, 2012. Participating farms will be opening their doors to the public and offering family friendly tours and activities between 10am and 4pm that day.

This one-day event will include several local nurseries and provide the public an opportunity to meet with local farmers and learn about the types of flowers, plants and produce that are grown locally. Farms will also make their products available directly to the public for purchase with proceeds donated to local area non-profits. Last year’s event hosted over 600 attendees and the grower participants donated over $5,000 to local area non-profits and created a sense of community that was worth repeating!

Elizabeth of Salinas, CA. is the winner of the Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House Raffle! She will receive CA Grown product from each of the 2011 participants along with a bag of soil from Sun Land Garden Supply every month for a year. Congratulations Elizabeth! Thank you for attending the 2nd Annual Open House and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s Open House.

Founded in 1897 as a retail mail order firm specializing in roses, The Conard-Pyle Co., has evolved from a wholesale container nursery to a leading genetics company involved directly in breeding roses, perennials and woody plants, and introducing plants from other breeders around the world.

Visitors to Star Roses will have the opportunity to tour one of the tree trial sites where we conduct the selection of our future introductions.  The Director of Research will be on hand to answer questions though out the day.

Rocket Farms is new to the Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House.  Rocket Farms has successfully created a balance of heritage and innovation.  With nine different growing locations and five million square feet produce potted orchids, poinsettias, herbs, and other specialty crops.

Tours of their greenhouse will educate visitors on various stages of orchid production. Classes will be taught on care and handling of orchids.  Potted orchids and herbs will be available for purchase.  Face painting is available to children.  Partial proceeds will be donated to Peace of Mind Dog Rescue.

Peace of Mind Dog Rescue will have dogs on site for pet adoptions between 11am – 3pm.

In 1980, founders Larry Jacobs and Sandra Belin began and based their family farm in Pescadero, CA.  Jacobs Farm produces over 60 varieties of organic herbs and edible flowers between nine coastal farm locations including their greenhouse facility located in Watsonville, CA.

Jacobs Farm is a founding participant of the Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open Houses.  Visitors will tour the successful concept of producing herbs in a greenhouse environment.  Children may pot an herb start, take home and add to your garden.  Jacobs Farm products will be available for purchase with proceeds benefitting Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks.

California Floral Greens is a founding grower participant of the Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open Houses.  Continental Floral Greens purchased T. Larry Jones three years ago to found California Floral Greens.  The Everett family has supplied and serviced the floral industry for over 50 years and now grows the largest selection of floral green varieties in California.

Visitors will learn about unique and sustainable growing techniques practiced to produce fabulous ornamental greens.  Coloring activities will be available for children.  Bouquets of greens will be available for purchase with proceeds benefitting Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks.

In addition to opening their farm doors to the community, farms participating in the 2nd Annual Monterey Bay Greenhouse Open House on Saturday, June 18, 2011 will be raising funds for local nonprofits.  Fresh from the farm flowers, edible herbs, plants, vegetables will all be available for purchase on this special day and the proceeds of these sales will be donated to local non-profits that participating farms have selected.

California Pajarosa is a founding grower participant of the Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open Houses. Visitors will learn about hydroponic and sustainable growing techniques coupled with breath-taking beauty of greenhouses full of California Grown roses. After your tour, fresh from the greenhouse rose bouquets and a barbecue lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, and tri tip sandwiches are available for purchase. All proceeds will be donated to the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group.
